Wireless earbuds have become one of the most used gadgets in any home: calls on the go, music on the commute, videos at night. Under Rs 5,000 there are plenty of choices, and the boxes all promise similar things. Here is what actually makes a difference once you use them every day.
Start with fit and comfort
If earbuds do not sit securely, nothing else matters: sound feels thin and they keep slipping out. Look for a pair that comes with three sizes of silicone ear tips and try each size in the first few days. The right tip seals the ear gently, which improves bass and blocks some outside noise without any extra electronics.
Check battery life the honest way
Most listings show two numbers: playback per charge and total playback with the case. Around 5 to 6 hours per charge covers a full workday of on-and-off listening, and 25 to 30 hours in total means charging the case roughly once a week. USB-C charging is worth having, so one cable can charge your phone, earbuds and other gadgets.
Bluetooth version and game mode
Bluetooth 5.0 or newer gives a stable connection and quick pairing; 5.3 is common in newer models and copes a little better in crowded places like offices and markets. If you watch videos or play mobile games, a low-latency game mode keeps sound in sync with what is on screen.
Do not forget calls
Many of us use earbuds more for calls and voice notes than for music. Check that each earbud has its own microphone and that either earbud works alone. A quick test call from a busy room tells you more than any spec sheet.
Water resistance and everyday care
An IPX4 rating means the earbuds can handle sweat and light splashes, which is enough for workouts and a sudden drizzle but not for swimming. Keep the charging contacts dry, wipe the ear tips regularly and store the buds in their case so they are always topped up.
A quick checklist before you buy
- Three sizes of ear tips in the box
- At least 5 hours per charge and 24 hours or more with the case
- Bluetooth 5.0 or newer, ideally with a game mode
- Touch controls you can learn in a minute
- USB-C charging and IPX4 splash resistance
- An easy exchange if the fit is not right
Keep this list handy and you will find a pair that suits the way you actually listen, without paying for features you will never use.
