Flying Karachi to Islamabad for a long weekend, or Lahore to Skardu for a short break? Travelling with just a cabin bag saves time at check-in and at the baggage belt. Here is a simple way to pack a 20-inch trolley so you carry everything you need and nothing you do not.
Know your limits before you pack
Most domestic airlines allow one cabin bag of around 7 kg, with size limits close to 55 × 40 × 20 cm, plus a small personal item such as a handbag or laptop bag. Rules differ by airline and fare type and can change, so check your ticket or the airline website a day before you fly. A light hard-shell trolley leaves more of that allowance for your things.
The essentials checklist
- CNIC or passport, and your e-ticket saved offline on your phone
- Phone charger, power bank and earbuds (power banks always go in the cabin)
- Two or three outfits that mix and match
- One pair of comfortable shoes; wear the heavier pair
- Toiletries in travel-size bottles
- A light shawl or jacket for the aircraft
- Any medicines you use regularly, in your personal item
Pack smart: roll, layer, fill
Roll T-shirts and trousers instead of folding them; they take less space and crease less. Put heavier items such as shoes near the wheels so the bag stays stable when it stands. Fill the gaps with socks and chargers, and use the zipped divider to keep clean and worn clothes apart.
Keep the essentials within reach
Your ID, phone, charger and water bottle should go in your personal item or the front section of the trolley, so you do not open the whole bag at the security check. An insulated steel bottle is handy: empty it before security and refill it at the gate.
What to leave at home
Most of us overpack "just in case". Skip the extra pair of shoes, full-size bottles, heavy books and anything you can easily buy at your destination. Sharp items such as scissors and razors with loose blades are not allowed in the cabin, so keep them out of your trolley altogether.
Before you leave home
Weigh the packed bag on a luggage scale, set your combination lock and take a quick photo of the bag in case you ever need to describe it. Then roll out the door. No queue at the baggage belt when you land, and more time for chai at the other end.
