The right sneaker can carry a whole outfit. Most wardrobes only need three shapes: a chunky runner, a clean court low and a canvas classic. Here is how to wear each one without overthinking it.
The chunky runner: balance the volume
A thick, sculpted sole like the Street Chunky Runner adds height and attitude. Because it is a bold shape, balance it with relaxed or straight-leg trousers that sit just on top of the shoe. Skinny jeans can make the shoe look oversized, while cargos, joggers and wide-leg denim feel right.
- Easy look: straight jeans, a boxy tee and an overshirt.
- Colour tip: pick up one shade from the shoe, such as orange, in a cap or a bag.
The court low: the one that goes with everything
A clean white court sneaker like the Court Classic Low is the most versatile pair you can own. It works with chinos and a polo for the office, with shorts on the weekend and even with a crisp shalwar kameez for a modern, relaxed look.
- Keep them clean; a white court shoe looks best when it is bright.
- Try no-show socks with cropped trousers and crew socks with shorts.
The canvas high-top: easy and classic
Canvas high-tops like the Retro High Canvas bring a casual, retro feel. Roll or cuff your jeans so the collar shows, or tuck slim cargos into the top for a more street look. A strong colour like cherry red turns a plain tee-and-denim outfit into something more considered.
Three rules that always work
- Match the mood. Sporty shoes with relaxed clothes, clean shoes with sharper outfits.
- Mind the hem. Trousers should touch the top of the shoe or sit just above it; too much fabric bunching hides the sneaker.
- Repeat a colour. One accent from your shoe, repeated once in your outfit, ties everything together.
Do not forget socks and laces
Small details change the whole look. White crew socks give chunky runners and court lows a sporty, retro feel, while no-show socks keep cropped trousers clean. Swapping the laces is the cheapest upgrade there is: try cream laces on a white pair for a vintage look, or a colour from the shoe's accent to make it pop.
