Fragrance is an investment, and it is disappointing when a scent you love seems to vanish by lunchtime. The good news is that a few small habits can help any perfume stay with you for longer, without needing to spray more.
1. Start with moisturised skin
Perfume holds better on skin that is hydrated. Apply an unscented lotion after your shower and spray your fragrance once it has absorbed. Dry skin lets the scent evaporate faster.
2. Choose your pulse points
The wrists, the sides of the neck, behind the ears and the inner elbows are warm areas where the fragrance gently diffuses through the day. Spray from about 15–20 centimetres away so the mist spreads evenly.
3. Do not rub your wrists together
It is a common habit, but rubbing creates friction and warmth that can flatten the top notes. Spray, then let the fragrance dry on its own.
4. Scent your clothes and hair
Fabric holds fragrance well. A light mist on a scarf or the inside of a collar keeps the scent around you. For hair, spray a brush rather than spraying the hair directly.
5. Layer with an attar
Alcohol-free attars sit close to the skin and unfold slowly. A stroke of attar under your spray creates a richer base that lingers. Musk and amber attars work with almost any fragrance.
6. Store bottles properly
Heat, light and air are the enemies of perfume. Keep bottles in their boxes or in a drawer, away from bathroom steam, windowsills and car dashboards, and always replace the cap.
7. Match the scent to the season
Heat makes fragrance project more but fade faster. In summer, a fresh EDT may need a top-up in the afternoon, while in winter a rich EDP will stay with you much longer.
8. Carry a travel size
A 10 ml spray or a small roll-on in your bag means you can refresh your scent before an evening out, without carrying a full bottle.
A note on nose fatigue
If you cannot smell your perfume after an hour, it may still be there. Our noses get used to familiar smells quickly. Ask a friend before you reach for another spray.
