EDP, EDT or Attar? A Simple Guide to Fragrance Types

Eau de parfum, eau de toilette and attar differ in strength, feel and how you wear them. Here is how to choose.

EDP, EDT or Attar? A Simple Guide to Fragrance Types

Walk into any fragrance shop and you will see the same words again and again: eau de parfum, eau de toilette, attar. They describe how concentrated a fragrance is and what it is carried in, and that changes how it smells, how strong it feels and how you should wear it.

Eau de parfum (EDP)

An eau de parfum usually contains around 15–20% perfume oils in alcohol. It feels rich and full, with a noticeable trail, and it tends to stay on the skin for several hours. EDPs are a good choice for evenings, cooler weather and occasions where you want your fragrance to be noticed. Two or three sprays are plenty.

Eau de toilette (EDT)

An eau de toilette is lighter, typically 5–12% perfume oils. The opening often feels brighter and fresher, which is why many citrus and aromatic fragrances are made as EDTs. They suit hot days, the office and the gym bag, and they are easy to reapply in the afternoon.

Attar

Attars are concentrated perfume oils with no alcohol. Instead of spraying, you roll or dab a small amount onto the skin. Because there is no alcohol to evaporate, an attar sits close to the body and unfolds slowly, which makes it feel intimate and personal. Attars are loved across South Asia and the Middle East, and many people layer them under a spray fragrance.

How to choose

  • For everyday wear: a soft EDP or a fresh EDT.
  • For evenings and weddings: a rich EDP such as an oud or amber.
  • For prayer, travel or a subtle scent: an attar roll-on.
  • For summer heat: a citrus EDT, reapplied as needed.

Try before you commit

A fragrance changes over a few hours on your skin, so the first spray never tells the whole story. Wear a sample for a full day before buying a large bottle. A discovery set of small vials is an easy way to compare several scents at home, in your own routine and climate.

Layering

You do not have to choose only one. A drop of rose or musk attar on the wrists, with an EDP sprayed on the neck, creates a scent that is personal to you. Start with notes that share something in common, such as rose with oud, or musk with amber, and keep the layers light.
