How to Read a Supplement Label

Serving size, servings per tub, allergens and best-before dates: what every line on a supplement label tells you, in plain English.

How to Read a Supplement Label

A supplement label holds a lot of information in a small space. Knowing where to look helps you compare products fairly and use them as intended. Here is a quick tour, using our own tubs as examples.

1. Net weight and serving size

The net weight is the amount of powder in the tub, for example 907 g for a 2 lb Whey Protein Isolate. The serving size tells you how much one portion is, such as one 30 g scoop. Divide the net weight by the serving size and you get the number of servings, which is the fairest way to compare prices between tubs of different sizes.

2. The nutrition table

This lists energy (kcal), protein, carbohydrate, sugar, fat and salt per serving and often per 100 g. Compare products using the per 100 g column, because serving sizes differ between brands.

3. Active ingredients per serving

Products like pre-workouts and amino blends list their main ingredients with the amount in each scoop. Our Pre-Workout Surge, for example, shows 200 mg caffeine, 6 g citrulline malate and 3.2 g beta-alanine per 12 g scoop. Caffeine is worth checking carefully if you also drink tea, coffee or energy drinks.

4. Ingredients list

Ingredients are listed in order of weight, from most to least. Flavourings, sweeteners such as sucralose and thickeners appear here too.

5. Allergens

Allergens such as milk, soy, peanuts, gluten or fish are highlighted in bold in the ingredients or listed separately. Always read this section if you have an allergy.

6. Directions and warnings

Directions show how much to use, what to mix it with and when. Warnings cover things like the maximum daily amount and who should not use the product. Follow them exactly.

7. Storage

Most powders keep best in a cool, dry cupboard with the lid closed tightly. Avoid leaving tubs in a hot car or on a sunny windowsill, and always use a dry scoop so moisture does not get in.

8. Batch number and best-before date

Every FORGEFIT tub is printed with a batch number and a best-before date. Check that the seal under the lid is intact when your order arrives, and use the product within 60 days of opening.
