How to Mix a Smooth Protein Shake Every Time

Clumps, foam and a shaker that smells: three common problems with three simple fixes. Here is our step-by-step routine.

How to Mix a Smooth Protein Shake Every Time

A good shake should be smooth, cold and quick to make. Most problems come down to the order you add things, the amount of liquid and how you clean your shaker. Here is the routine we use.

Liquid first, powder second

Always pour the liquid in before the powder. Powder poured into an empty shaker packs into the bottom corner and stays there. For one 30 g scoop of whey, start with 250–300 ml of cold water or milk. Use more liquid for a thinner drink and less for a thicker one.

Use the right tools

  • A shaker with a mixing ball, like the Forge Shaker, breaks up clumps in about 20 seconds.
  • A level scoop. Run the scoop along the rim of the tub so you get the same amount each time.
  • Cold liquid. Powder mixes more easily and tastes better cold. Add ice after shaking, not before.

Shake properly

Close the lid until it clicks, keep a finger on the flip cap and shake hard for 15–20 seconds. Let the shake sit for a few seconds so any foam settles before you drink.

Water or milk?

Water gives a lighter, quicker-to-drink shake. Milk makes it creamier and adds its own protein, carbohydrate and calories, so check the label of your milk if you are counting. Many people use water at the gym and milk at home.

Simple flavour ideas

  • Chocolate whey + milk + a spoon of peanut butter, blended with ice.
  • Vanilla whey + cold coffee for an iced latte style drink.
  • Strawberry whey + milk + half a banana in a blender.

Keep your shaker fresh

The smell people complain about comes from leftover milk. Rinse your shaker with warm water as soon as you finish, leave it open to dry, and wash it properly with soap at the end of the day. The Forge Shaker is top-rack dishwasher safe once the mixing ball is removed.

When to drink it

There is no single right time. Many people have a shake after training or with breakfast, and others use one to fill a gap between meals. Fit it into your day in whatever way works with your usual meals.

That is all there is to it: liquid first, a level scoop, a hard shake and a quick rinse. Got a question about a product? Message us on WhatsApp.
