Lawn is the fabric of a Pakistani summer: light, breathable cotton that keeps you comfortable from the first hot week of April to the last humid days of September. But not every lawn feels the same once it is stitched. A few simple checks will help you pick a suit you will actually reach for.
Start with the weave
Lawn is a fine, plain-weave cotton. The finer the yarn and the tighter the weave, the smoother and softer the fabric feels against your skin. Hold the fabric up to the light: a good lawn looks even, without thin patches or slubs, and lets a soft glow through without being see-through.
If you prefer a little more structure for straight shirts, A-lines or office wear, look at cambric. It is still cotton, but slightly heavier and more opaque, so it holds a crisp shape and rarely needs a slip.
Printed, digital or embroidered?
- Screen prints use a few flat colours and give clean, classic florals and block-print geometrics.
- Digital prints can reproduce hundreds of shades, so painted botanicals and soft gradients look rich and detailed.
- Embroidered lawn adds texture to the shirt front or neckline. It is a little warmer to wear, so save it for evenings or cooler days.
Colours for hot days
Light grounds such as ivory, mint, blush and powder blue reflect more heat and look fresh in daylight. Deeper shades like teal, rust and indigo hide creases better on long days and travel well. A good trick is to pair a light shirt with a darker trouser, so the suit feels balanced and practical.
Check what is in the set
Before you order an unstitched suit, check the fabric lengths. For most shirt styles up to size L, 3 metres of shirt fabric is enough; longer shirts, flared cuts or bigger sizes may need more. Look for a separate border panel too, because it gives your tailor room to finish the daaman, sleeves or neckline beautifully.
Care that keeps prints bright
Wash new lawn separately in cold water for the first two or three washes, turn it inside out and dry it in the shade. Iron on medium heat on the reverse side. These small habits keep colours clear for many summers.
