Unlike kurtis or shirts, abayas are usually sized by length. A 54 abaya measures 54 inches from the top of the shoulder to the hem. The body is cut loose and flowing, so length is the measurement that matters most.
How to measure
- Stand straight, barefoot or in the shoes you wear most often.
- Ask someone to place the end of a measuring tape on the top of your shoulder, right next to your neck.
- Let the tape fall straight down the front of your body to your ankle bone, or to where you want the hem to sit.
- Note the measurement in inches and round it to the nearest size.
Choosing between sizes
As a rough guide, a 52 suits heights around 4'10"–5'0", a 54 suits 5'1"–5'3", a 56 suits 5'4"–5'6" and a 58 suits 5'7" and above. If you usually wear heels or like your abaya to just brush the floor, go one size up. If you walk a lot, use public transport or prefer the hem above your ankle, go one size down.
What about the width?
Our abayas are cut in a relaxed A-line or a straight, flowing shape, so one width fits a wide range of body shapes. Sleeves are cut generously too. If you prefer a closer fit through the shoulders, a tailor can take in the side seams without changing the length.
Fabric changes the fall
- Nida is light and matte. It falls in soft folds and resists creasing, which makes it ideal for daily wear and travel.
- Crepe and twill crepe are a little heavier, with more body. They hang straighter and suit embroidered and front-open styles.
- Linen blends are cool in summer but crease more, which suits a relaxed look.
Front-open or closed?
A closed abaya slips over your head and is the simplest choice for daily wear. A front-open abaya works like a long coat: wear it open over a dress or kurti, or close it with snaps. Both use the same length sizes.
