Layering Serums: What Goes First?

Vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and retinol all have a place. Here is a simple guide to layering them without overthinking it.

Layering Serums: What Goes First?

Once you own more than one serum, the question comes up quickly: which one goes on first, and can they be used together? The good news is that layering is far less complicated than it looks. A few simple rules cover almost every combination.

Before you start, remember that you do not need every serum every day. Two well-chosen serums used consistently will do more for your routine than five used at random.

Rule 1: thinnest to thickest

Apply products from the most watery to the richest. Water-light serums go first so they can spread easily, followed by thicker serums, then oils and creams. A dry-oil serum or a moisturizer always comes after your water-based serums, never before.

Rule 2: give each layer a moment

Wait thirty seconds to a minute between layers. This helps each one settle and reduces pilling, those little rolls that appear when too many products are rubbed in too quickly.

A morning example

  • Vitamin C serum on clean, dry skin.
  • Niacinamide serum if you use it, for a more balanced look by midday.
  • Hyaluronic acid serum on slightly damp skin for extra hydration.
  • Moisturizer, then sunscreen as the final step.

An evening example

  • Double cleanse: a cleansing oil, then a gentle foam.
  • Hyaluronic acid serum for comfort.
  • Retinol serum on dry skin, two or three nights a week to start.
  • A rich cream to finish.

Pairs to keep apart

Vitamin C and retinol are both best used on their own schedule: vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night. On retinol nights, skip other strong actives and clay masks so your skin can stay comfortable. Hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, on the other hand, are easy companions that work alongside almost anything.

How many drops?

Three or four drops of a water-light serum cover the face and neck. Dry oils spread further, so two or three drops are usually enough. Using more does not make a serum work harder; it simply takes longer to absorb and makes pilling more likely.

Listen to your skin

If your face starts to feel tight, warm or irritated, simplify: drop back to cleanser, hyaluronic acid, moisturizer and sunscreen for a few days. Then reintroduce your other serums one at a time. Layering should make your routine feel better, not more stressful.
