Smartwatch battery tips: get more days from every charge

A few settings make a big difference to how long your smartwatch lasts. Start with these seven.

Smartwatch battery tips: get more days from every charge

Smartwatches are most useful when you forget about charging them. The OHMZ Watch S2 is rated for up to 7 days of typical use, but how you set it up decides whether you get close to that or need the charger every other night. These seven tweaks help most watches, not just ours.

1. Be selective with always-on display

An always-on AMOLED screen is lovely, but it is the single biggest battery cost. Turn it off, or schedule it only for your working hours, and use raise-to-wake instead.

2. Lower the brightness

Auto brightness works well indoors. If you mostly stay inside, a fixed medium level often saves more than auto mode, which can over-brighten under fluorescent lights.

3. Trim your notifications

Every buzz wakes the screen and the vibration motor. In the companion app, keep calls, messages and the two or three apps you really need, and switch off the rest.

4. Choose the right tracking interval

Continuous heart-rate measurement and all-day SpO2 sampling use the optical sensor constantly. A 10- or 30-minute interval still gives useful daily trends with far less drain.

5. Use a simple watch face

Animated faces and ones packed with live widgets refresh more often. Dark backgrounds help too: on AMOLED screens, black pixels are switched off.

6. Keep GPS for outdoor workouts

Connected GPS borrows your phone's location and is lighter on the watch battery. Save full GPS for runs and rides where you leave the phone at home.

7. Charge smart

  • Top up during a shower or while you get ready - 20 minutes adds a day or more.
  • Keep the charging contacts clean and dry for a solid magnetic connection.
  • Avoid leaving the watch on a hot dashboard or in direct sun; heat ages any battery faster.

Bonus: keep the software up to date

Watch and app updates often include battery fixes, for example smarter sensor scheduling or a bug that kept Bluetooth searching in the background. Install updates while the watch is on its charger so the process never stops halfway.

Try a couple of these for a week and check the battery graph in the app. Most people find one or two settings that make the biggest difference for their own routine.
