The best everyday bag is not the most expensive one. It is the one that fits your day: your commute, your phone, your laptop or lunch box, and the way you like to carry things. Before you buy, ask yourself four simple questions.
1. What do you carry every day?
Empty your current bag onto a table and sort it into what you really need and what simply travels with you. If your daily kit includes a laptop or A4 files, you need a tote with a flat base, like our Structured Tote. If it is just a phone, cards and keys, a mini crossbody will feel lighter and freer.
2. Shoulder, hand or across the body?
- Top handles look polished and suit office days, but they keep one hand busy.
- Shoulder straps are easy for longer days. Look for a wide strap if the bag will be heavy.
- Crossbody straps keep both hands free and your things in front of you, which helps in busy markets and on public transport.
3. Structured or slouchy?
Structured bags hold their shape, stand on a desk and keep things organised. Slouchy bags like a hobo are softer, more relaxed and mould to your body. Many people keep one of each: a structured bag for work and a soft one for weekends.
4. Which colour works hardest?
If you want one bag for everything, choose a neutral that goes with most of your wardrobe. Black is the easiest, tan feels warmer with lawn prints and denim, and burgundy adds colour while still feeling classic. Gold-tone hardware suits warm colours; it also lifts black.
Check the details
Look inside before you decide. Inner zip pockets keep valuables safe, protective feet help a tote last longer, and a magnetic snap or zip stops things falling out. Small details like painted edges and even stitching tell you how well a bag is made.
Think about the weight
Lift the empty bag before you fill it. Faux leather is lighter than real leather, but chains, thick linings and hardware add up. If you walk a lot or use public transport, a lighter bag with a wide strap will feel better at the end of the day.
