The 50/30/20 rule is a starting point, not a law. It divides take-home pay into three buckets so you can see at a glance whether your spending is balanced.

The three buckets

  • 50% needs: housing, utilities, groceries, transport, minimum debt payments.
  • 30% wants: eating out, hobbies, subscriptions, holidays.
  • 20% savings and extra debt payments: emergency fund, goals, investing.

When the numbers do not fit

In high-cost areas, needs can easily take more than half. That is normal. Use the rule to spot where you can make small changes — perhaps a cheaper phone plan or cancelling an unused subscription — rather than as a pass or fail test.

Make it automatic

Set up a transfer to savings on payday so the 20% leaves your account before you have a chance to spend it.
